ACTIVITY: Prediction: How Many Eggs Will Hatch?

ECS - Grade 2 (use more sophisticated approach for higher levels)

TIME REQUIRED:

10-15 minutes

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To make predictions as to how many eggs will hatch.
  2. To make a graph(before and after)so that predictions can later be made.
  3. To discuss why some eggs might not hatch.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

  1. paper
  2. stickers
  3. felt

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Ask the children to count how many eggs are in the incubator.
  2. Ask the children if they think that all of the eggs will hatch.
  3. What might be some reasons why some of the eggs might not hatch?
    1. sickly duckling (not healthy)
    2. rotten egg
    3. infertile egg
    4. incubator failures
  4. Ask the children to each make a prediction as to why all the ducklings might or might not hatch? (Make a prediction as to how many will hatch.)
  5. Print predictions on a graph.
  6. Compare predictions to what might happen in nature. What are some of the problems which might occur naturally? (example: predators, bad weather, etc.)
