ACTIVITY: Prediction: How Many Eggs Will Hatch?
RECOMMENDED FOR:
ECS - Grade 2 (use more sophisticated approach for higher levels)
TIME REQUIRED:
10-15 minutes
OBJECTIVES:
- To make predictions as to how many eggs will hatch.
- To make a graph(before and after)so that predictions can later be made.
- To discuss why some eggs might not hatch.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
- paper
- stickers
- felt
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Ask the children to count how many eggs are in the incubator.
- Ask the children if they think that all of the eggs will hatch.
- What might be some reasons why some of the eggs might not hatch?
- sickly duckling (not healthy)
- rotten egg
- infertile egg
- incubator failures
- Ask the children to each make a prediction as to why all the ducklings might or might not hatch? (Make a prediction as to how many will hatch.)
- Print predictions on a graph.
- Compare predictions to what might happen in nature. What are some of the problems which might occur naturally? (example: predators, bad weather, etc.)
