I\u2019ll buy that. We have a bunch of people keeping a bunch of hens for eggs. Sounds good so far. Of course, most cities where this is being allowed or proposed the by-laws allow for some small number of HENS only. The argument is that this is somehow sustainable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_836\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/08-04-02-024a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-836\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-836\" title=\"08-04-02 024a\" src=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/08-04-02-024a-300x293.jpg\" alt=\"Rooster\" width=\"300\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/08-04-02-024a-300x293.jpg 300w, https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/08-04-02-024a.jpg 343w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rooster<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But, hey, never mind that someone ELSE has to raise chickens \u2013 including the roosters &#8211; in order to provide these people with chicks. Never mind that someone ELSE has to deal with the unwanted roosters \u2013 remember that roughly 50% of the chicks hatched are going to be male. The majority of urban chicken \u2018farmers\u2019 don\u2019t even want to THINK about butchering chickens, let alone do it themselves. No sirreee \u2013 let\u2019s ignore that part of the picture \u2013 it isn\u2019t fun and doesn\u2019t fit in with the \u2018my chickens are wonderful, loving creatures who give me eggs\u2019 view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/2009-03-04-072.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-837\" title=\"2009-03-04-072\" src=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/2009-03-04-072-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/2009-03-04-072-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/2009-03-04-072.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong>Right to Food<em> [The right to adequate food is realized when every man, woman and child, alone or in community with others, has the physical and economic access at all times to adequate food or means for its procurement] <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 Eggs in the store aren\u2019t as good as free range eggs, but they are NOT \u2018bad\u2019.<span> <\/span>So, this is not about access to safe, adequate food. It is about the difference between regular and premium. The philosophy behind the UN right to food initiative is to ensure people do not starve, not to ensure they have access to caviar.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p><span><a href=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/2009-06-22_22-11-27_001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-840\" title=\"2009-06-22_22-11-27_001\" src=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/2009-06-22_22-11-27_001-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/2009-06-22_22-11-27_001-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/2009-06-22_22-11-27_001.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong>Food security <em>[to ensure secure access to adequate amounts of safe, nutritious, culturally appropriate food for everyone, produced in an environmentally sustainable way and provided in a manner that promotes human dignity]<\/em><\/strong>&#8211; Yes it is true that a hen will help keep the bugs down in your garden. She will also help herself to your newest green shoots and some of your other produce, so she can only be in the garden at certain times. If you let her in the garden too soon she will scratch up your seeds and eat them before they even start. Yes it is true that she produces fertilizer-grade manure, AND she will eat some of your kitchen scraps. Along with her fertilizer <span> <\/span>she has various talents that may be enough to justify allowing people to keep a few hens. BUT Let\u2019s not get too bombastic about all this. It is NOT about food security or the right not to starve. Really, all we\u2019ve accomplished with keeping hens is to move the dial a few notches. Without the ability to breed and hatch your own hens, you are still dependent on someone else for your eggs \u2013 only now instead having to buy the eggs, you will have to buy the chicks.
