{"id":5470,"date":"2015-09-03T09:00:31","date_gmt":"2015-09-03T15:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/?p=5470"},"modified":"2015-09-01T10:45:49","modified_gmt":"2015-09-01T16:45:49","slug":"gamification-1016-scoring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/2015\/09\/03\/gamification-1016-scoring\/","title":{"rendered":"Gamification 101[6]: Scoring"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Approximate Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>This is Part 6\u00a0in my continuing saga of my current iteration of a gamified course.<\/p>\n<p>In a course where assessment is <a href=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/2015\/07\/16\/8-part-series-on-gamification-as-reigeluths-post-industrial-paradigm-of-instruction-part-4\/\">primarily attainment\u00a0based\u00a0rather than time-based<\/a>, and that uses\u00a0<a title=\"8 Part Series on Gamification as Reigeluth\u2019s Post-industrial Paradigm of Instruction: Part 6\" href=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/2015\/07\/18\/8-part-series-on-gamification-as-reigeluths-post-industrial-paradigm-of-instruction-part-6\/\">criterion-referenced rather than\u00a0norm-referenced measures<\/a>, getting the learning tasks (assignments, quests, etc.) right is key.<\/p>\n<p>I give my students lots of choices when it comes to\u00a0how they earn enough points to get the grade they want. For simplicity, I decided that 10 XP (experience points) would equal 1%. That means that a perfect 100% takes 1,000 XP. My school has an institutionally determined mapping of % to letter grades, so this allows me and my students to see where they stand easily. In most courses, anything below a certain % &#8211; like 50% &#8211; is a fail. Since everyone starts off with a score of 0, this would mean that they would appear to have an &#8216;F&#8217; for a good portion of the term. That doesn&#8217;t seem reasonable to me, and it&#8217;s certainly not encouraging. To address that, I set up a variety of levels so that students could see themselves making progress. In the grade sheets (I call them Score Cards), the display of the letter grade is grayed out until they get past the &#8216;F&#8217;. I want them focusing on their score and their level &#8211; at least for the first part of the course.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scorecard-10-Notes.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5516\" src=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scorecard-10-Notes.png\" alt=\"scorecard 10 Notes\" width=\"858\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scorecard-10-Notes.png 858w, https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scorecard-10-Notes-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 858px) 100vw, 858px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Notice that there is a level ABOVE 1,000 XP. Given the wide variety of tasks they can do, it is possible for them to end up with more than 1,000 XP at the end of term.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This is a key aspect of this gamified design.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll come back to this later and look at it again. For now, it&#8217;s enough to know that students start off with a score of 0, and\u00a0<em><strong>everything they do adds to their score.<\/strong><\/em> There is nothing in my class that can result in their losing XP. If they do an inadequate job on a particular quest, they will get less than a perfect score &#8211; but they will still get some points. They almost always have the option of fixing their work and resubmitting it for reassessment (students rarely take me up on that offer), or they can do other things to make up for the points.<\/p>\n<p>Next time, we&#8217;ll look at the quests themselves.
