My house is mired in the Apple ecosystem and we love every single bit of it- despite the maladies of the latest update. But this article is certainly not about an individual consumer purchasing Apple products, which I think is the root cause of why Apple fails in the classroom- especially if it is a shared device. To get straight to the point: if you cannot purchase iOS devices for each student \u2013 don\u2019t bother. Here\u2019s why:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 2rem; font-style: normal; font-weight: 600; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; clear: none; color: #222222;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">1. \u201cGet Your Head Out of Your Apps\u201d \u2013 Apple\u2019s Favourite Line is a Quiet Lie<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-style: normal; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #222222; line-height: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; line-height: 24px;\">There once was a time that I highly recommended the iPad as an excellent device for integrating technology into the classroom but no longer is this the case. After examining iPad implementation across the province, country and abroad over the last six years I have come to determine that it is simply not designed for shared use in\u00a0education. This contradicts the very idea of what it means to collaborate \u2013 a 21st century skill we can all agree upon. It would seem that Apple\u2019s philosophy when it comes to education is\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-style: italic; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #222222; line-height: 24px;\"><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">share less buy more<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; line-height: 24px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 2rem; font-style: normal; font-weight: 600; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; clear: none; color: #222222;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">2. Privacy (How confidently can you answer the questions below?)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-style: normal; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #222222; line-height: 24px;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">If you really want to understand what I\u2019m getting at when it comes to privacy (and I\u2019m not talking about the countless teachers using their personal devices to \u2018document\u2019 student learning)\u00a0<em style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: italic; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\"><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">see if you can answer the following questions with confidence:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 3em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #222222; line-height: 24px;\">\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">What is the deletion procedure for pictures stored locally on iOS devices in your school, board or region?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Who is responsible for deleting pictures of students or student work?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">What are the criteria for using 3rd party apps to house your students\u2019 photos or work? Are they local or international? Who owns the 3rd party? Are they for profit? Do they give to charity? Do they lobby for education? Do they run criminal background checks on their employees? What is their policy for sharing data with other 3rd party marketers?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Surely you must be aware that when iCloud is turned on, photos taken can be uploaded to iCloud on PhotoStream \u2013 so who deletes those pictures?\u00a0<em style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: italic; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\"><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Did you know that<\/strong>\u00a0<strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">they can remain \u2018deleted\u2019 for up to 30 days<\/strong><\/em>? Yet another delete has to be performed before they are permanently deleted. (Does Apple run criminal background checks on their employees?) Remember what happened to Jennifer Lawrence? A tad dramatic I know \u2013 but it happened.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 2rem; font-style: normal; font-weight: 600; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; clear: none; color: #222222;\"><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 20px; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">3. Management Software is Half-Baked at Best<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-style: normal; line-height: 24px;\">The management of multiple iPads becomes a nightmarish experience when you learn that Apple itself does not produce a manager for multiple iPads.
