{"id":46,"date":"2008-09-30T10:58:52","date_gmt":"2008-09-30T16:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.minkhollow.ca\/KB\/Blog\/?p=44"},"modified":"2014-09-12T11:52:39","modified_gmt":"2014-09-12T17:52:39","slug":"why-should-students-come-to-class-if-they-already-have-my-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/2008\/09\/30\/why-should-students-come-to-class-if-they-already-have-my-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Should Students Come to Class if They Already Have My Notes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Approximate Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p>Once again, there is an article where some professor (or group of professors) laments that people won&#8217;t come to his(her) class if they have prior access to their notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eschoolnews.com\/news\/top-news\/index.cfm?i=55374\" target=\"_blank\">Students profit from diligent note-taking<\/a> Knetwit.com offers cash, gifts for students who submit lecture notes online, but some faculty members fume<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your concern that students won&#8217;t come if they already have notes is legitimate, <strong>IT MEANS YOU&#8217;RE DOING IT WRONG<\/strong>. Students SHOULD have access to your notes, slides, and any other resources you use. They should be coming to class because you ADD something. If you can&#8217;t add anything, then maybe you don&#8217;t deserve to be in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Do you read your notes? Do you read your slides? I hereby invite you into the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>Do you <strong><em>really <\/em><\/strong>believe that the path to knowledge should go only through you? How arrogant is that?<\/p>\n<p>Coming to class is typically (even with a merely average teacher)\u00a0 the most efficient way to get the information one needs for that course. Trying to make up the difference by NOT coming to class and then &#8220;studying&#8221; on one&#8217;s own takes at least three times as long. Class = 1 hr VS self-study = &gt;= 3hr.
