{"id":4557,"date":"2014-12-25T09:00:09","date_gmt":"2014-12-25T16:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/?p=4557"},"modified":"2014-12-23T10:59:52","modified_gmt":"2014-12-23T17:59:52","slug":"innovations-in-undergraduate-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/2014\/12\/25\/innovations-in-undergraduate-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovations in Undergraduate Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Approximate Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p>A few months ago I presented\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/publicsquare\/community-summit\/2014-summit\/breaking-the-mould.html\">Innovations in Undergraduate Learning <\/a>\u00a0summit\u00a0\u2013 SFU Public Square \u2013 Simon Fraser University.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/1411170345621.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4555\" src=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/1411170345621-300x109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/1411170345621-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/1411170345621.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was asked these two questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is the most compelling innovation in undergraduate learning that you have seen?<\/li>\n<li>What are three changes Canadian post-secondary institutions can make today to support undergraduate student-centered learning?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here are my answers:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">What is the most compelling innovation in undergraduate learning that you have seen?<br \/>\nForgive the lack of humility, but at this point in time, I&#8217;d have to say my gamified approach.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">What are three changes Canadian post-secondary institutions can make today to support undergraduate student-centered learning?<br \/>\nThis was my initial answer:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Lighten up on (or at least change your approach to) cheating.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Recognize &amp; reward good teaching.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Quit giving high-stakes exams.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Quit assuming all classes will have marks that fit a normal curve.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Move to competency-based assessment.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Give up on the lock-step notion of teaching &amp; learning.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Respect your students.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Each is important, but the answer isn&#8217;t very pithy, so I worked on it while I was at the conference.
