Note:\u00a0 no disrespect is meant to any of the real 12-step programs.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>We admitted we were powerless over science\u2014that our lives had become uncorrelated. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Came to believe that an authority better published than ourselves could restore us to our senses. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Made a decision to turn our data and our labs over to the care of professors emeriti \/<\/em><\/span>as we understood them\/<\/span><\/em>. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of our notes. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Admitted to social constructivists, to ourselves, and to principal investigators of related projects the exact nature of our data. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Were entirely ready to have journal referees remove all these defects of our submitted papers. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Humbly asked those better funded than us to remove our shortcomings. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Made a list of all persons we had corrected, and became willing to cite them in all our papers. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure their annual reports. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

10.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Continued to take personal inventory and when we were found out promptly corrected it. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

11.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Sought through analysis and verification to improve our conscious contact with \/<\/em><\/span>real data\/<\/span><\/em>, asking only for validity in our sample and the power to publish it. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

12.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Having had a rude awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to department heads and granting agencies, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
