I was at a <a title=\"CNIE 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/cnie.nipissingu.ca\/indexen.html\" target=\"_blank\">conference <\/a>this week and one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lsl.nie.edu.sg\/people\/researchers\/manu-kapur\" target=\"_blank\">keynotes <\/a>talked about his notion of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/csjarchive.cogsci.rpi.edu\/proceedings\/2006\/docs\/p1587.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">productive failure<\/a>&#8220;. This is something I&#8217;ve been thinking about for <a title=\"What if the Secret to Success Is Failure? \u2013 NYTimes.com\" href=\"http:\/\/minkhollow.ca\/beckerblog\/2011\/11\/07\/what-if-the-secret-to-success-is-failure-nytimes-com\/\">quite some time<\/a> but it&#8217;s nice to see the idea getting more press.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kqed.org\/mindshift\/2012\/05\/flip-this-blooms-taxonomy-should-start-with-creating\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kqed.org\/mindshift\/files\/2012\/05\/bloom_pyramid-2-300x321.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a>Today&#8217;s article talks about how this looks through the lens of Bloom&#8217;s. I like it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rather than starting with knowledge, we start with creating, and eventually discern the knowledge that we need from it.<\/p>\n<p>The pyramid creates the impression that there is a scarcity of creativity \u2014 only those who can traverse the bottom levels and reach the summit can be creative. And while this may be how it plays out in many schools, it\u2019s not due to any shortage of creative potential on the part of our students.<\/p>\n<p>I think the narrowing pyramid also posits that our students need a lot more focus on factual knowledge than creativity, or analyzing, or evaluating and applying what they\u2019ve learned.
